Shata Dhauta Ghrita: The Ayurvedic Tradition Behind Malai Kesar Body Lotion

In Ayurveda, there is a beautiful word: ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ด๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข for the transformation that takes places through intention and action. It is the becoming and elevating, while preserving the main essence. Shata Dhauta Ghrita is a beautiful example of this, where ghee is made into a moisturiser.

Shata Dhauta Ghrita is a traditional Ayurvedic moisturiser prepared by repeatedly washing and working ghee with water, separating the water after each wash and continuing the process. With repeated washing and agitation, the ghee changes, becoming smooth and cream-like. It is very different from simply applying ghee to the skin. The process transforms the heavy texture of ghee into something much lighter, softer and creamier, while preserving the benefits of the ingredient.

And the name tells you almost everything you need to know.

Shata means hundred.
Dhauta means washed.
Ghrita refers to clarified butter, or ghee.

Put together, Shata Dhauta Ghrita means ghee that has been washed one hundred times.

Why wash ghee 100 times?

At first, the idea sounds almost excessive.

Why take something as simple as ghee and wash it again and again?

The answer lies in the traditional understanding of samskara, the idea that the way an ingredient is processed can change its qualities and characteristics. As ghee undergoes repeated washing, its familiar oily texture changes into a much softer preparation. Ayurvedic practice has associated Shata Dhauta Ghrita with, soothing and nourishing applications for the skin. Traditionally, it has been used for sunburns, anti aging, and deep moisturisation.

The connection between Shata Dhauta Ghrita and Malai Kesar Body Lotion

Ghee itself is rich in fats, but Shata Dhauta Ghrita is often described as having a soft, creamy texture rather than the heavy, oily feel you might expect from ghee.

What we find more interesting is the principle behind this moisturiser, how it is designed around nourishment, softness and is comfortable on the skin. There is something beautiful about the idea of taking a rich ingredient and transforming it through careful preparation until it becomes soft, smooth and easy to work with. In that sense, this centuries-old preparation has a surprisingly modern idea at its centre: how can something nourishing be made more comfortable to use?

We took that inspiration and approached it from the perspective of modern everyday body care. The result is Malai Kesar Body Lotion, a soft body lotion made by ghee and kesar.

Why Malai and Kesar?

Malai, or milk cream, is actually what is used to make ghee. Itโ€™s fascinating how malai can transform into butter, then into ghee and into shata dhauta ghrita, each stage becoming something entirely new, yet carrying the essence of what came before.

Kesar, or saffron, is very popular in Indian beauty rituals. It is traditionally valued for its antioxidant properties and is often associated with enhancing radiance.

Together, they embody the idea behind Malai Kesar: a beautiful union of richness and radiance.

Shata Dhauta Ghrita: Ancient idea, modern perspective

What makes Shata Dhauta Ghrita worth talking about today isn't the idea that ancient skincare was somehow better than modern skincare.

The interesting part is seeing what we can learn from traditional ways of working with ingredients and then considering how those ideas can fit into modern formulations.

That is also how we think about skincare at Soulganic.

We love natural ingredients and Indian traditions, we want to understand it, refine the idea and create something that makes sense for everyday life.

Malai Kesar Body Lotion is our expression of that approach. One of the biggest things we took from Shata Dhauta Ghrita was not simply the ingredient (ghee) itself.

It was the texture.

This body lotion moisturises without the skin feeling coated, sticky or overly greasy. Its designed to spread easily across the skin and absorb comfortably, leaving it feeling soft and moisturised.

It is made to fit into the simplest kind of routine:

Shower. Moisturise. Done.

Use it after a shower, whenever your skin feels dry, or simply whenever you want that extra softness.
